LET'S REDUCE RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

Image
WHAT IS RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION? The radioactive pollution is defined as the physical pollution of living organisms and their environment as a result of the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions and testing of nuclear weapons, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, handling and disposal of radioactive waste, and accidents at nuclear power plants. Nuclear tests are carried out to determine the effectiveness, yield, and explosive capability of nuclear weapons. The proportion of radioactive pollution is 15% of the total energy of the explosion. Radioactive pollution of water, water sources, and air space is the result of radioactive fallout from the cloud of a nuclear explosion. Radionuclides are the main sources of pollution; they emit beta particles and gamma rays, radioactive substances. HOW CAN WE REDUCE-IT? Select reagents and procedures that minimize the volume and toxicity of all wastes. If feasible,...

LET'S IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF SOIL

Image
WHAT IS SOIL POLLUTION?  Soil contamination or soil pollution as part of land degradation is caused by the presence of xenobiotics (human-made) chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment. It is typically caused by industrial activity, agricultural chemicals or improper disposal of waste. How can we fix it ? To prevent soil pollution, its causes must be controlled. 1. Reduce the use of plastics: Plastics and polythene bags destroy the fertility of the soil. Hence, these should be disposed off properly and if possible, their use should be avoided. 2. Industrial pollutants: Some waste products from industries and homes pollute the soil. These pollutants should be treated chemically to make them harmless before they are disposed off. 3. Insecticides: Other pollutants of soil include pesticides and insecticides.  4. Use manures instead of chemical fertilizers. 5. Industrial waste should be treated before release. Therefore, the excessive use of these substances s...

LET'S IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF AIR

Image
WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION? Air pollution  is the presence of substances in the  atmosphere  that are harmful to the  health  of  humans  and other  living beings , or cause damage to the  climate  or to materials. There are different types of air pollutants, such as gases (such as  ammonia ,  carbon monoxide ,  sulfur dioxide ,  nitrous oxides ,  methane  and  chlorofluorocarbons ),  particulates  (both organic and inorganic), and  biological molecules . Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the  natural  or  built environment . Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution. HOW CAN WE FIX IT? Riding a bike or walking instead of driving. Taking a bus or carpooling. Buying a car that has greater fuel efficiency. Turning off...

LET'S REDUCE WATER POLLUTION

Image
WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION? Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. Water pollution results when contaminants are introduced into the natural environment. HOW CAN WE REDUCE IT? 1. DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full. 2. DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet. Simsbury has a Hazardous Waste Collection day usually from 8:00am to 1:00pm at Henry James School. Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority lists all collection dates. 3. DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet. For recommendations on proper disposal for all types of medical wastes, visit the CT DEP publication here. 4. Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrapper...

LET'S REDUCE SOIL EROSION

Image
WHAT IS SOIL EROSION? Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil; it is a form of soil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice, snow, air, plants, animals, and humans.  HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT? Crop Rotation : Rotating in high-residue crops — such as corn, hay, and small grain — can reduce erosion as the layer of residue protects topsoil from being carried away by wind and water.   Conservation Tillage : Conventional tillage produces a smooth surface that leaves soil vulnerable to erosion. Conservation tillage methods such as no-till planting, strip rotary tillage, chiseling, and disking leave more of the field surface covered with crop residue that protects the soil from eroding forces. Contour Farming : Planting in row patterns that run level around a hill — instead of up and down the slope — has been shown to reduce runoff and decrease the risk of water erosion. Strip Farming : In areas...

LET'S START WITH PLANTING TREES ☺️

Trees  help in maintaining the ecological balance of the earth by emission of Oxygen, absorption of Carbon dioxide. Most important benefits of  trees  are: It helps the environment to provide an enormous amount of oxygen and reduce the toxic carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and pollutants by absorbing.
